The 75th General Assembly’s first regular session convened on January 8, 2025. The
state is facing a $1.2 billion budget gap, but most cuts made so far have barely made a
dent. Every dollar saved is a dollar that won’t be cut from the big expenses — Medicaid
providers, education and the state workforce. Other big issues have included labor
policies, regulation of firearms, protection of marriage, and ammunition sales. Democrats retain control of both the House and the Senate; but Republicans flipped several House seats in the last election, resulting in Democrats losing their supermajority in the House. The Senate also has been altered by resignations of senators, requiring vacancy committees to fill those empty seats.
State Senator Cleave Simpson, Senate District 6, & State Representative Katie Stewart,
House District 59 will present an overview of the legislative session and answer your
questions.
Senator Simpson represents Senate District 6: Alamosa, Archuleta, Conejos, Costilla,
Dolores, La Plata, Mineral, Montezuma, Montrose, Ouray, Rio Grande, Saguache, San
Juan, San Miguel. Senator Simpson is the Assistant Minority Leader Representative Stewart represents House District 59: Archuleta, La Plata, Montezuma,
and San Juan Counties. Representative Stewart is on the committees for Agriculture,
Water & Natural Resources, and Health & Human Services.
