Voter Education

“We’ll fight authoritarianism and any laws and policies that may lead our country in that direction. White nationalism and efforts to move our government toward authoritarianism threatens the very foundation of our democracy. The League will use our power and resources to combat any attempt to undercut the values of free and fair elections, and our democracy of, by, and for the people.”

– Dianna Wynn, LWV US President

“Partisan politics are overshadowing American values — and the cornerstone of our democracy, the freedom to vote, is under threat. Let us be clear: voting rights are not a partisan issue; they are an American issue.”

– Dr. Deborah Ann Turner

Empowering Voters

Our goal is to increase vote participation, knowledge, and access:

Voter Registration: Making it easy and accessible for eligible citizens to register to vote, including automatic or pre-registration options and removal of barriers to registration.

Voter Education: Informing voters about their rights, how to register, voting procedures, election dates, candidates, and issues, often through workshops, community forums, and online resources. Empowering voters with facts, not telling them who to vote for.

Ballot Access: Ensuring voters have convenient and equitable access to voting locations and options, including early voting, mail-in ballots, and accessible polling places.

Get Out the Vote (GOTV) Efforts: Mobilizing voters through outreach campaigns, reminders, transportation assistance, and community-led drives to increase turnout.

Community Mobilization and Partnerships: Collaborating with local organizations to amplify voter engagement, especially in historically underserved or marginalized communities.

Legal and Policy Advocacy: Fighting against voter suppression, advocating for fair voting laws, and protecting electoral rights and integrity.

Use of Technology: Implementing online voter registration and ballot solutions to increase accessibility, especially for younger or tech-savvy voters.

Promoting Critical Awareness and Collective Identity: Encouraging political empowerment by fostering voters’ understanding of their power, rights, and shared community interests to actively engage in democracy.

Defending Democracy

The League of Women Voters is committed to defending democracy by empowering voters, ensuring free and fair elections, and advocating for transparent, accountable government that represents all people:

Protecting elections by ensuring they are free, fair, and secure, guarding against voter suppression, disinformation, intimidation, and baseless election challenges. This involves maintaining strong institutions and laws that promote election integrity and voter access at all levels. Without favor or bias.

Defending the rule of law by upholding judicial independence, transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct of public officials and institutions to prevent abuse of power and political influence over courts or law enforcement. This also includes rejecting political violence and condemning efforts to undermine constitutional norms.

Fighting corruption by ensuring government accountability and preventing misuse of power to weaken democratic governance.

Using legal and civic action such as litigation, peaceful protest, and advocacy to confront and resist anti-democratic actions, including unlawful attempts to strip away civil rights or politicize institutions.

Promoting democracy through informed citizen engagement, supporting local and national journalism, and standing against authoritarian threats both domestically and internationally.

Our Vision: We envision a democracy where every person has the desire, the right, the knowledge and the confidence to participate.

We are non-partisan, not non-political.

The League of Women Voters of La Plata is a non‑partisan community organization. Nonpartisanship is not just a policy, but the bedrock principle that defines who we are. We never support or oppose political parties or candidates — but we always take a stand on issues that matter.

We are, and have always been, a political force for the common good: defending equitable voting access, advancing informed participation, and addressing vital community concerns.

Our positions are issues-based, issues are not partisan. We reach them through rigorous study and member input — and we champion policies that uplift, strengthen, enrich and serve our community, free from partisan divides.

We never base our stance on politicians. Even when a party or candidate agrees with us, we do not endorse them. Our allegiance is to democracy, our community, and the truth.

Elected Officials

Once individuals are elected, they are now public servants, responsible for representing all their constituents, regardless of party and upholding the Constitution. Holding elected officials accountable to the public interest is not a partisan act; it’s a vital function of a healthy democracy.

We advocate for policies that uphold our values — strengthening democracy, our institutions, and the people they serve, not out of allegiance to any political party.
