December 14, 2023

Dear Members, and especially you thoughtful readers:

I’m excited to let you know that the next meeting of the LWV La Plata Book Group will be held on Tuesday, January 23, 2024 at Hermosa Cafe, in downtown Durango. We’ll meet from 10:30am-12pm; come join us for thoughtful discussion and meet more League members over a cup of coffee or tea.

The next book is: Free Thinker: Sex, Suffrage and the Extraordinary Life of Helen Hamilton Gardener, by historian Kimberly A. Hamlin. Books are available at Maria’s Bookstore (with a 15% discount) or your favorite retailer or library.

Free Thinker is the first biography of Helen Hamilton Gardener, who died as the highest-ranking woman in federal government and a national symbol of female citizenship. Hamlin takes active steps to unpack the racism that underpinned the women’s suffrage movement, giving readers (or listeners) a detailed view of Gardener’s politics and the contradictions inherent in them. Her life sheds new light on why it was not until the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that the Nineteenth Amendment became a reality for all women.

We think this sounds like a very interesting and timely read coming up to the 104th Anniversary of the LWV in February.

The Book Club is open to all LWV members; please click here Book Group RSVP to let us know you’re interested. We’d love to have you at the table!

Happy reading and Happy Holidays to you all! See you in the new year…..
