Voter Astroturfing — a PAC-funded site made to look like a nonpartisan public service rather than a political operation.
With the midterms coming up, lot of people are seeing ads (often from Elon Musk’s America PAC) pointing them to a site called VoteSafe.org to check their voter registration. I wanted to flag some concerns before you use it.
The official, safe options are VOTE411.org, by the League of Women Voters or Vote.gov, run by the federal Election Assistance Commission. They don’t collect your personal information and doesn’t track you.
VoteSafe.org is different. According to reporting, it collects a huge amount of data about you, including:
- Your full name, date of birth, home address, email, and phone number
- Your IP address and precise location
- Details about your device and browser
- Every page you view and every link you click on the site
- Your voter registration status and district (pulled from private data, not official state records)
As of late August 2026, VoteSafe.org’s privacy policy was quietly changed. It now allows America PAC to sell your personal information and behavioral “inferences” about you to unnamed “business partners,” who can then pass your data along to still more parties. By using the site, you’re also agreeing to receive calls and texts from America PAC and other third parties.
In practice, the site reportedly sends your information out in real time to companies like Facebook, Google, The Trade Desk (an ad-tracking firm), X, and an email/text marketing company called Iterable — plus it creates a “device fingerprint” so you can still be tracked even if you clear your cookies.
VoteSafe.org’s technology has also reportedly been white-labeled by other groups, including one tied to inaccurate mailings sent to deceased voters and people with outdated registration info. White labeled means: taking a product or piece of technology that one company built, and letting other organizations put their own name and branding on it while the underlying system stays the same.
America PAC has spent over $180,000 promoting VoteSafe.org on Meta. Some of the ads are innocuous-looking messages, just reminding people to vote.
If you want to check or update your voter registration, use VOTE411.org or Vote.gov Skip any third-party site funded by a political group, no matter how official it looks.
