Membership Chair, Diane Goodchild and Board President, Laurie Meininger represented the LWV of La Plata County at Durango’s first-ever swearing in ceremony for new US citizens on February 29 at the La Plata County courthouse. During that ceremony, 13 new US citizens were sworn in by Judge James Candelaria. The new citizens hailed from Mexico, Cambodia, Germany and Russia. Laurie spoke at the ceremony, welcoming the new citizens and encouraging them to exercise their right to vote. Following the swearing in, Diane and Laurie handed out single stemmed roses and post cards with a QR code linking them to the GO VOTE Colorado website to encourage these new citizens to register immediately. Both Di and Laurie were encouraged by several of the new Americans’ excitement when they realized they could vote in the March 5 election.
