*4/7/09 Durango Herald: Christina Rinderle Thompson and Paul Broderick will be Durango's newest city councilors and Doug Lyon will serve four more years after their victories in Tuesday's citywide election. Aaron Tucson, a former councilor, finished fourth in an election.
Thompson led with 2,423 votes then Lyon at 2,389, Broderick with 2,133 and Tucson at 1,210.

Where to Vote
*To vote in an election, you must be registered, know your precinct, and vote at the polling place assigned to your precinct.
*If you are not currently registered to vote in Colorado, see the register to vote link below.
*To find your precinct, click precinct and
answer the questions regarding name, address, and birthday. You will get your voter registration information returned. Note: The last two digits of the "Precinct Number" will be your precinct.
*When you know your precinct, you may find your polling place by clicking polling place
*If you would like to check on your current registration, download a form to change your official address, check to see if you have previously requested a permanent mail-in ballot or if you would like to request a permanent mail-in ballot, click vote CO
How to Register to Vote
*Are you registered to vote? Do you want to change your party, your address, your name? You may register or change your registration at the La Plata County Clerk and Recorder's office in the La Plata County Court House, 1060 E. 2nd Ave, Durango, Colorado.
*For your convenience, the LWV of La Plata will be registering voters, distributing permanent mail-in ballot information and distributing general voter information at the Durango Farmers Market every 2nd and 4th Saturday from 8am to noon during the summer and fall. The Durango Farmers Market is located in the First National Bank Parking Lot. See you there!

*If you prefer to register to vote by mail in Colorado, click CO registration print the form and submit it by mail to the County Clerk for the county of your residence.
*If you would like an application for a permanent mail-in ballot to be mailed directly to you for each election overseen by the La Plata County Election Recorder's Office click permanent mail-in ballot.
*If you need to register to vote by mail from outside the state or the US, you may access the National Voter Registration materials by clicking NVR
Additional Voting Information
*If you are a first time voter that is registering to vote by mail or you are voting in person, click voter id to check out the id requirements.
*Citizens who have registered to vote but who did not vote in the last general election (November 2006) are considered inactive. (A general election is held every 2 years in even years on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The entire US House of representatives is elected, some members of the Senate, and, every four years, the President of the United States.)
*Inactive voters will not automatically receive a mail-in ballot for this mail-in election unless they verify their current address with the County Clerk-Recorder at least 29 days prior to Election Day. They can also reactivate their status, get a ballot, and vote in person at the County Clerk-Recorder's office in the Courthouse.
*Registered voters in La Plata County who have moved can update their addresses with the County Clerk or by re-registering with the new address. Note that ballots are not forwarded but you can vote in person at the Courthouse. Voters who move within the 30 day cut-off should contact the County Clerk's office at 970-382-6296 or 6297 for further clarification.
*Citizens who have registered to vote but who did not vote in the last two general elections (November 2006 and November 2004) have been purged from the Colorado voting rolls. A purged voter must re-register to vote in the state of Colorado and La Plata County.
*A new Colorado statute authorizing permanent mail-in ballots for all elections is now in effect. Voters may indicate that they would like to be on the permanent mail-in list when they register or can update previous registration to so indicate. If you would like an application for a permanent mail-in ballot to be mailed directly to you for each election overseen by the La Plata County Election Recorder's Office click permanent mail-in ballot.

*3/8/09 Durango Herald: City Council hopefuls focus on economy Impact on Durango overriding concern

The field is set for the April 7 Durango City Council election. The three seats currently held by Scott Graham, Renee Parsons and Doug Lyon are up for grabs next month, but only Lyon is seeking re-election. Four candidates are vying for the three open seats, and all recently visited The Durango Herald offices to discuss their candidacies.

*The City of Durango will conduct its regular biennial election on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, to elect three City Council members. City Council members are elected at-large to represent all residents of the City. The candidates will be elected for four-year terms. The terms of office will commence on Tuesday, April 21, 2009.
- Candidates for City Council are nominated by petition without regard to political party affiliation. Nomination petitions may be circulated beginning Wednesday, February 11, 2009 and must be returned to the City Clerk by 4:30pm on Tuesday, March 3, 2009.
- This election will be conducted by mail ballot and administered by the Durango City Clerk. Ballots will be mailed on or before March 23, 2009 to all active registered electors of the City. Inactive registered electors of the City must provide identification and apply for a ballot in person at the La Plata County Clerk's Office on or before March 9, 2009.
- Applications for absentee ballots can be obtained by calling 970 375-5010 or 970 375-5015 or in person at the City Clerk's Office.
- A walk-in polling location will open at the Durango City Clerk's Office at 7:30am on March 23. All ballots must be received by mail or in person by 7pm on Tuesday, April 7, 2009 to be counted.
